ND stadium to host lax quarterfinals in 2021
by flanner96 (2017-04-18 17:02:22)

...which would be the first games played there correct? Would have to do some work on the fake turf in terms of lines, etc. I wonder if the turf is wide enough.

What's the capacity?

I would think we might need to upgrade that, if only on a temporary basis, for the NCAA quarterfinals.

Qf will be at the football stadium not Arlotta *

That's cool, but I was under the impression

that the stadium was reserved for football and football only. Is this yet another tradition tossed to the wind by Swarbrick et al.? Or has this been done before and I'm just not aware?

Well Graduation is there, rumored outdoor hockey

When your reasoning for building Crossroads is so it becomes a multi-use structure used more than 7 times a year, it would seem to follow that the stadium/field would be used more, too. Wasn't that also the reason for field turf - it would hold up over a multitude of diverse events?

I'm not making the argument for this, only that it appears that horse has left the barn.

Also, Reunion classes have dinners in the press box - I have been to one of these (pre - Crossroads)

Don't know but ND had to submit a bid

to host the event and in the bid package was information on where the game would be held. ND choose ND stadium and wasn't forced by anyone to host it there.

I also believe there is a 12K minimum on seating to host a QF - one reason Hopkins doesn't host QFs and why Arlotta wouldn't work either.

ND wasn't "forced" by anyone to choose ND Stadium

But if they want to host a QF, there isn't another option available to my knowledge given capacity requirements.

I should have noticed that. Sorry. *

Yes, presumably the weekend after commencement

ND's commencement typically is between May 15-21. It was on May 22 in 2011, so that finals would not be the week after Easter (which was April 24 that year). Presumably, it will be on May 16 in 2021.

The NCAA LAX quarterfinals are on the weekend before Memorial Day, meaning they may occur as early as May 16-17 or as late as May 22-23.

That means ND can host the quarterfinals at ND Stadium in a year when commencement is early (May 15 or 16) and when the quarterfinals are late (May 21-23). 2021 and 2022 are the next such opportunities.

EDIT: Hofstra will host quarterfinals in each of the next 6 seasons, from 2017 through 2022. Other quarterfinal sites (2019-2022 announced today):

2017 -- Delaware
2018 -- Navy
2019 -- East Hartford, CT (Rentschler Field, home of UConn football; Fairfield will be host school)
2020 -- Brown
2021 -- ND
2022 -- Ohio State (Ohio Stadium)

The 2017 and 2018 championships previously were awarded to Foxboro. The 2019 and 2020 championship weekends will be at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, and 2021 and 2022 will be at Rentschler Field in East Hartford -- the first times the championships won't be at an NFL stadium since 2001 at Rutgers (no current NFL stadium ever had hosted up to that time, although the 1973 and 1992 championships were at Penn's Franklin Field, former home of the Eagles).

I'm not a fan of field turf, but at least in this case

It's probably useful.

And it's nothing less than shocking that Hofstra is hosting quarterfinals six years in a row. Of course, proximity to New York City (while simultaneously not being a "city school," unlike Manhattan or St. John's) probably helps greatly. But in any event, it's a real coup for that school. I am surprised that the NCAA did that, however, given the geographic growth of lacrosse in recent years.

IIRC, the Hofstra AD is head of the site selection committee

so there isn't any conflict of interest there or anything.

And the poster below is correct. Nothing wrong with Hofstra, ND, etc. But, the farthest south the QFs will be is Hofstra for the next 6 years. That's a problem...I don't know many ACC fans are going to repeatedly drive up 95 to go to Hofstra.

Other QF locations include
by tf86  (2017-04-27 10:27:05)     cannot delete  |  Edit  |  Return to Board  |  Ignore Poster   |   Highlight Poster  |   Reply to Post

Newark, DE (this year)
Annapolis, MD (next year)
Columbus, OH (2022)

All south of Hempstead, NY (although Columbus barely is, and in any event, Hempstead is probably a shorter drive than Columbus for most of the southern Division I programs).

Your point is well taken, however, even if the details aren't entirely correct. Four years is too long a time for Hempstead to be the shortest drive of the QF sites for most of the southern schools.

It should have been Hofstra OR the places in 2019 on.

Not Hofstra AND those places. Few people have a problem with ND or thatOSU hosting QF games. But there's a big problem when ND or thatOSU is the "southern" QF location.
