Conference tournaments taking shape
by tf86 (2024-04-26 09:57:21)

Start with the one everyone cares about. In the ACC, the combination of last week's results (ND over UNC, Syracuse over UVa) clinched the #1 seed for ND and the #2 seed for Syracuse. Virginia, despite their loss, also clinched a bid courtesy of ND's win over North Carolina.

If Duke beats North Carolina, Duke is the #3 seed and Virginia is the #4 seed regardless of the outcome of the ND-Virginia game. If Duke loses and Virginia wins, Virginia is the #3 seed, North Carolina is the #4 seed and Duke misses the conference tourney. If Virginia loses and North Carolina wins, last two seeds come down to goal differential in the Duke-North Carolina game:

If Duke loses by <5 goals, Duke is the #3 seed and Virginia is the #4 seed.
If Duke loses by 5-6 goals, Virginia is the #3 seed and Duke is the #4 seed.
If Duke loses by 7-10 goals, Virginia is the #3 seed and North Carolina is the #4 seed.
If Duke loses by > 10 goale, North Carolina is the #3 seed and Virginia is the #4 seed.

Other conferences:

America East: One team has clinched a bid in the conference tourney and five teams are in contention for the remaining three bids. Three head-to-head matchups affect these outcomes:

Albany/Binghamton: Albany has clinched a berth in the conference tournament, and earns the #1 seed with a win here. Binghamton needs either a win or a Bryant win to qualify for the tournament.

Bryant/Merrimack: The only matchup where the loser cannot qualify for the conference tournament. Bryant is win and in. Merrimack needs a win and a Binghamton loss to qualify for the tournament. Further, a Bryant win also clinches a tournament berth for Binghamton and eliminates the loser of the UMBC-Vermont matchup. Meanwhile, a Merrimack win clinches a tournament berth for the loser of the UMBC-Vermont matchup.

UMBC/Vermont: Regardless of the outcome, the winner is in, and the loser earns a bid with a Merrimack win over Bryant, but is eliminated with a Bryant win over Merrimack.

ASUN: Six teams earn a bid, four have clinched. Utah, Jacksonville and Air Force all have clinched and currently are in a three way tie for the conference lead. None of them controls their own destiny, however:

Utah: Needs a win and either an Air Force loss or a Jacksonville win. Alternatively, Utah also gets the #1 seed if all three lose.

Jacksonville: Needs a win and a Utah loss.

Air Force: Needs a win and a Jacksonville loss.

Bellarmine has clinched a bid in the conference tournament and is locked into the #4 seed.

Remaining two seeds will be earned by Cleveland State, Robert Morris or Detroit.

Cleveland State: Needs a win over Detroit, or a loss combined with a Robert Morris loss and a Cleveland State loss by < 14 goals.

Robert Morris: Needs a win or a Cleveland State win, or a Cleveland State loss by < 13 goals.

Detroit: Win and in.

A-10: Field is set, but seeding will be determined by this week's head-to-head matchups:

Richmond/St. Joe's: Winner is #1 seed, loser is #2 seed.

High Point/UMass: Winner is #3 seed, loser is #4 seed.

Big East: Denver, Georgetown and Villanova all have clinched berths. Providence/St. John's matchup this week is de facto extension of the Big East tournament, in that the winner is in and the loser is out.

Denver has clinched #1 seed. Georgetown/Villanova winner will be #2 seed. Georgetown will be #3 seed with a loss. Villanova will be #3 seed with a loss and a Providence loss. Providence will be #3 seed with a win and a Villanova loss. Villanova will be #4 seed with a loss and a Providence win. Providence will be #4 seed with a win and a Villanova win. St. Johns will be #4 seed with a win.

Big Ten: Everyone makes the field, seeding is set and tournament begins this weekend.

#4 Michigan plays #5 Ohio State, winner plays #1 Johns Hopkins next week.
#3 Penn State plays #6 Rutgers, winner plays #2 Maryland next week.

CAA: Three teams have clinched, four are in contention for final berth with none controlling their own destiny:

Delaware/Towson: Winner is #1 seed, loser is #2 seed. Fairfield is locked into #3 seed.

Drexel, Hofstra, Monmouth and Stony Brook all are in contention for #4 seed. This week, Drexel plays Monmouth and Hofstra plays Stony Brook.

Drexel: Needs win and Hofstra win.
Hofstra: Needs win and Monmouth win.
Monmouth: Needs win and Stony Brook win.
Stony Brook: Needs win and Drexel win.

Ivy: Cornell, Yale and Penn have clinched berths. Cornell clinches #1 seed with a win or a Yale loss (against Princeton). Yale would need a win and a Cornell loss. Princeton gets last berth with a win or a Brown loss. Brown gets final berth with a win and a Princeton loss.

MAAC: Six team field is set with opening round of tournament this weekend.

#4 Marist plays #5 Siena, winner faces #1 Sacred Heart next week.
#3 Manhattan plays #6 Quinnipiac, winner faces #2 LIU next week.

Patriot: Field is set; however, seeding permutations are still quite complicated (e.g., Colgate could be anywhere from #1 seed to #6 seed.) Teams that have clinched a berth in the conference tournament are: Army, Colgate, Lehigh, Loyola, Boston U and Navy.

Question on Ivies: Is Brown In?

You mention Cornell, Yale and Penn have all clinched and Brown factors into it. But is there another team that can get in if Brown falters? Harvard?
(what happened to them this year?)

Thanks for all this ...

Either Princeton or Brown will get final berth

Harvard is mathematically eliminated, as is Dartmouth.
