It was a "medical redshirt" but certainly not planned. Also, Willie Fry, Ross Browner and Luther Bradley were freshmen on the 1973 NC team and 5th years on the 1977 NC team. They were among the 6 players suspended for the 1974 season; a woman had accused them of rape but never pressed charges, and I believe the suspensions actually were for parietals violations. Al Hunter was also in that group of 6 in 1974. He would've played as a 5th year senior in 1977, but was suspended yet again for parietals violations and would up becoming the first player ever selected in the NFL's supplemental draft.
