every scholarship OL that has been at ND for the past 40 years has been a good run blocker at some point--they wouldn't get to ND if they hadn't been. Most high schools don't have a sophisticated passing attack and so they focus on developing their running game. For an OL to be considered a major D1 scholarship athlete he would have had to dominate in a running based scheme in high school. Now, you still need to hone that technique in college and if it is ignored it can certainly be lost.
Under Weis the fundamentals of the game were completely ignored and the OL was asked to focus on getting really fat and then on trying to learn to pass block better. The results are disastrous. In 2007 he tried to install multiple offenses with multiple qb's and couldn't get anything going.
Of course, I am sure that you believe that AFA and Navy were more talented teams than we were and it would have been impossible to run the ball against those stalwarts. Nick Saban himself couldn't have beat those teams in 2007 and I WOULD RATHER NOTRE DAME GIVE UP FOOTBALL than sell it's soul to get a Nick Saban or an Urban Meyer to lead the lads!
