I've been hearing we need to join a conference for so long and for so long, the conferences have been the bastion of instability.

While there's been no existential threat to the SEC or the Big 10, they've been anything but stable from a blind addition point of view. It also wouldn't surprise me if in 5-10 years either or both end up splitting.
