Al Qaeda resurgence in Afghanistan

Interesting report out of the "United Nations Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team" summarized in this Long War Journal article.

In summary, Al Qaeda maintains good relations with the Taliban government, establishing training camps and madrassas in 10 of 34 Afghan provinces. Further, in an agreement with the Iranian government, Al Qaeda continues to operate and move freely in and out of Iran.

POTUS in July, 2021:

"But make no mistake: Our military and intelligence leaders are confident they have the capabilities to protect the homeland and our interests from any resurgent terrorist challenge emerging or emanating from Afghanistan.

We are developing a counterterrorism over-the-horizon capability that will allow us to keep our eyes firmly fixed on any direct threats to the United States in the region, and act quickly and decisively if needed."

Might be good time to start utilizing that capability. Who knows, throwing a couple missiles over Iran and into an Al Qaeda target in Helmand or Herat might not be a bad idea.
