Grief, indeed. Tears, heat, khat, poverty, famine--what a shitty part of the world. I don't have a desire to visit. At one point in my life I did. When I worked for Citibank in Singapore, I managed the account of a timber exporter that shipped timber from forests in Borneo to a Yemeni port city on the Red Sea, Al Hudaydah (Hodeida). At the time, I said to myself, it might be interesting to visit Yemen. I know better now.


Khat

It’s amazing how many in Yemen use it daily (over 90%) and the problems that result. Growing a leafy plant in that climate takes a lot of water.

I checked out the wikipedia article. Wikipedia claims that 40% of Yemen's water supply goes to growing khat trees.
