When the group chat asked what the Irish would need to do to make this a successful season, I said to beat Georgia. That was the only thing Kelly could do to show that the program is making progress to be capable of a championship. I considered saying Georgia or Michigan. But I couldn't be confident Michigan would be good enough for that to be a big road victory. Obviously, that didn't matter.

No, 10-2 would not be a successful season in these circumstances. And Kelly has shown himself to be no closer to capable of winning a championship as he was when he marched into Austin with the No. 10 team in the country and lost 8 games, including to a team that fired its coach and to two teams that hit low-water program marks under their long-tenured coaches. As he made that trip to Texas, we already knew he could field decent teams that can't win a game that mattered.
