The problem with Malort is anyone doing it as a shot. I wouldn't generally want to do a shot of any of the bitter alcohols (although I understand it's a but of an industry signal).

But mixing these things in with other ingredients can be great. I've had a drink with some Malort in it and it was great. It's bitter grapefruit; what's not to love?

Devil in the White City is an excellent Malört cocktail

1.5 oz Tanqueray Sevilla (Orange infused Gin)
1 Oz. St Germain (or other Elderflower liqueur)
0.5 oz Malört

Shake with ice and strain into whatever glass you want, garnish with orange twist.

The sweetness of the elderflower and orange aspect of the gin balance out the bitterness of the Malört. It’s legitimately delicious.

Whether it works as a cocktail ingredient, which I would think it would.

Somewhere I have a recipe I drew up for a pretty tasty tall drink that uses Cheerwine and fernet. I dubbed it the Ruby Warthog, as, if I recall correctly, the inspiring challenge was to create a drink with a tie-in to the O'Connor short story "Revelation."
