Republic. But portions of the first six chapters (167 pages) of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich focus a good deal on examining the Republic's creation and place in German history and the shortcomings that allowed Nazism to fester and the inner workings of how its leaders failed to stop Hitler. Especially chapter 3, 5, and 6. But portions of other chapters, though you'll have to sift more through Hitler's biography a bit. Now those chapters also have faced more modern criticism for trying too hard to force a framing of the Third Reich as almost a symptom of general German geopolitical attitudes. While there are parts that could be criticized I didn't think the framing was as over the top as the modern criticism makes it out to be.
