I can still feel the utter shock of hearing that "farewell note" they kept reading over footage of the bronco being escorted home by the LAPD.
Can anyone imagine the sideshow of 94-95 with Twitter?
I touched my first boob that night.
There were no boobs.
That’s not entirely true. St Joe’s swim team practiced at our place. Their schedule was up in the dorm as we were avid fans of the sport.
were at ND tennis camp. Remember getting in 18 on Burke each morning before youngest was up. That was when they were taking soil samples on the course prior to building the new bookstore and dorms.
"circus chase" at Der Rathskeller in the UW Memorial Union. What a clown show!
I remember chopping some vegetables when I noticed I was the only one in the back. Most of the employees were high school kids (such as myself) so goofing around & not working wasn't unusual. I went looking to see where everyone was at. I found a crowd of them huddled around one of the TVs where it looked like they were watching The NBA Finals. I found this odd as most people in Louisville couldn't care less about the NBA. That's when I noticed the white Bronco on the split screen. Everyone was mesmerized by not only the chase but also how the lovely people of Los Angeles on the side of the road had basically turned a low speed chase into a make-shift party. After about 15-20 minutes people started to lose interest & went back to work. I never thought that would turn into one of those "Do you remember where you were?" moments.
Of course OJ & Co. would provide another one of those moments in October 1995.
That was such a fun place to work at though. The manager/part owner usually got shit faced with his friends who he let drink for free. Since he was drunk 95% of the time, the only job he could do was cut the pizza into slices after it came out of the oven. Of course, it was not unusual for him to tell me to remake a pizza asap since he cut the last one to where it had 3-4 gigantic slices and 3-4 sliver-type slices.
Ah...the memories.
Get your popcorn ready. He's already posted a diatribe about how he's not Khloe Kardashian's real father (but he would be proud if he was...)
his painstaking progress in finding the real killers? I understand he's diligently leaving no stone unturned at every Vegas casino.
his old "followers" accompanied by a shot of the Bronco being pursued by 30 LAPD vehicles.
He may then have missed game 7 on 6/22/94 and not shot 2 for 50 (OK, so it was 2 for 18) and the Knicks would have won their first championship since 1973, which they still seek, and Patrick Ewing would not be with Karl Malone and John Stockton among the best NBA players without a championship.
Yes, as a Knicks fan I was beside myself here in Austin watching the slow chase versus game 5, which the Knicks won. Still, even with Starks unable to hit the broad side of a barn, the Knicks only lost game 7 by 6 to Hakeem and the Rockets.
I'm not even sure what turned, but it's crazy what a big moment this was in our history. A HOF football player and bad-actor (more ways than one) created a media frenzy almost unheard of before that.
Was it race? Was it fame? Both? But, even with both thrown in this story is so far ahead of just about every other story in terms of crazy/infamy that it's still hard to believe.
I'll see what I can do Nordberg.
would never have known who Al Cowlings is and 99.999999% would never have known who Kato Kaelin is. Lance Ito is probably in that range, as well.
maybe it's because of my profession but when he was picked I wasn't surprised - appropriate fit with Bailey and Dershowitz and among all of them the most likely to actually take the lead in the courtroom. Shapiro, on the other hand, I hadn't heard of.
excluding the alleged(?) murderer. Father's family came from near Buffalo, and his uncle had season tickets for years. Cousin's basement was plastered with Bills and Simpson crap. The only Bills player I ever rooted for was Walt Patulski, and saw him play at a Bears pre-season game. It was quite a treat.
Patulski came from Syracuse tangent: Met Jim Brown at the Canton OH HOF Football Game when he was inducted. Great moment.
the OJ case the entire course.
Spring semester 1996.
although I think it's possible to have gotten way off track with the DNA stuff.
We were about 3 rows below a sky box that had the low speed chase on TV. Everyone was turned around watching the TV rather than the game.
Then the strike and the season was call off with the good guys in first place.
at UW-Madison, and the strike was devastating. I listened to the radio broadcasts, and knew it would be our year. What can I say about "The Big Hurt," that hasn't already been said? He is one of my all time favorite players. He did it clean. Three summers later, family attended a game at the still "New" Comiskey Park to celebrate my M.A. Frank hit one out to dead center. It was the best gift evah. Sox won! Sox won! Sox won!
Many times and many years before on family visits to the "Old" Comiskey Park, such was not the case. We would go in regularly for double headers. I recall the team winning both games a grand total of once. Saw some of the Sox greats hit them out in the "Old Comiskey," though. It was all good.
I loved that team, my second favorite Sox team ever. It was just about the same team as the year before, but with the great addition of Julio Franco.
Frank had possibly his best season going, and did win the MVP. He had an absolutely insane 1.217 OPS.
Edit to add: The only thing that can compare is any game the Sox beat the cubbies or when the Cardinals beat the cubbies.
Lifetime: 1 visit to 1600 W. Addison to see Lou Brock play in his final season. Cards lost, but I got to see Lou play! Best deal the cubbies ever made.
the Curse of Rocky Colavito hadn't run its course yet. The Tribe was doomed.
Come to think of it, it still hasn't.
Speaking of Joey, it still pisses me off that he has the Sox all-time home run record. If not for the strike, Frank could have hit 50. He had 38 when the strike hit, with a month and half left in the season.
I believe it was against the Seattle Mariners.
No one in their right mind would ever consider taking their wife to a White Sox game. You’re as guilty as OJ unless you can come up with some better excuse as to your whereabouts that evening.
and has never been in Wrigley Field.
She also doesn't know the first thing about baseball, but that's beside the point.
We still have a few remaining questions regarding that blood stain leather glove on your couch and what exactly was your personal relationship with Kato Kalyan
I was in Nepal for six weeks, missed the murders and the Bronco ride. On the trip home, I was sitting in O'Hare watching CNN, and I asked the business man next to me what the heck had happened, and he looked at me incredulously "where the hell have you been???" Umm, trekking the Himalayas. That answer seemed to satisfy him, and he explained everything that had happened.
something to do with your lack of awareness?
Seems amazing.
It was spectacular from start to finish.
I did the full Annapurna Circuit. Started in Besishahar, Nepal (about 2,500 ft). Went up and over the Throng La Pass (about 17,800 ft) and made it to Pokhara like 22 days later. Every day was breathtaking. And not just because of the lack of oxygen.
In about one month I'll be back at altitude again as I'm preparing to hike up Mt. Fuji (12,400 ft) in early July.
Hope I make it back alive!
It included a 12 day trek. We went to the Gosainkunda Lakes region. It was absolutely stunning. While I was with a group, most days I trekked alone just behind the sherpas. For whatever reason, the altitude didn't bother me after the first day (we had a steep climb the first day). I'd never had that much time in complete silence. It was glorious. Someday, I would like to go to Bhutan. I love that part of the world.
Mountain climbing and/or high altitude trekking is something I have a big interest in and want to get involved with. Not sure what type of condition you have to be for that.
I go for a couple hikes a year in the Rockies with greater than a mile of elevation gain in a day. I try to stay in shape throughout the year by jogging up inclines, but one thing that always gets me is that my hip flexors tire out from adding a 25 pound pack. Try to do some training with some weight on your back to get conditioned.
I am walking around a bit, but I can't really prepare for the altitude.
We will do Bear Mountain or Breakneck Ridge either 29 or 30 June just to get used to walking uphill.
Frankly it will be a challenge, but not insurmountable. That altitude is not fun, but at the very lower bound of hypoxia danger. As we are healthy with no lung or breathing problems, I think we'll be fine. The trail is well traveled with aid stations and if anyone is in trouble we'll head right back down.
If I recall, you lived in Japan, so perhaps you've already climbed from one of the 5th stations upward. If so, maybe it will be more strenuous below.
I did an overnight hike from one of the fifth stations, and I thought it was pretty easy (I don't even recall any scrambling), and that the only difficult part was the annoyance of waiting on groups of older Japanese (mostly women) in a couple very narrow spots. In fact it was so crowded that I probably could have done it without a headlamp and relied solely on light from others. I would advise hiking sticks for the descent. I sank and slide quit a bit on each step down for the first couple hundred yards.
I saw a woman wearing a shirt with OJ's face on it with the words, "Guilty or Not, O.J. is still my Hero!" The racial tension from that whole episode was just incredible.
It was an orange t-shirt with a white bronco and underneath it said, "Drink more apple juice because OJ will kill you".
with their logo and in enormous letters “FREE O.J.” Beneath that in a much smaller font was “With the purchase of a dozen donuts.” That was up for the duration of the trial.
For the record it was Maple Donuts, near York, PA.
mind and there was that other shooting of an African American woman by (I believe) a Korean store owner and the verdict went against the expected outcome of guilty.
Lots of resentment around that time.
was bizarre when you look at the verdict.
The DA's office seemed to have such confidence that they would win the case that they were willing to move it from a whiter area (Santa Monica) to a downtown court so that a guilty verdict wouldn't be perceived as a "lynching" court. This was after a string of botched high profile murder cases (Menendez brothers and Phil Spector - think they both preceded OJ).
It was very clear that the jury was looking for a reason to acquit (and crucify Chris Darden). If the flying DNA wouldn't suffice, the glove spectacle sure did the rest. Apparently California DA's don't realize that winter gloves are supposed to fit snugly and the human hand is thinner in the cold sand swells in an LA courtroom.
I always wonder in the Vegas charges were more severe than needed as a payback of sorts. The case certainly brought some ugliness together - race, the pampered athlete/celebrity, the sudden reappearance of OJ with his bros in South Central.
I've often wondered what the jurors and African American community think about the verdict now, and sadly would 2019 be much different if another AA celebrity was accused of something similar.
maybe second to Bill Cosby.
Long suffering Knicks fan here. They were covering the white Bronco on 37 stations, why did NBC have to cut away too?
There was a guy on the radio there who did a dead on Charles Barkley impression. He did a hilarious riff on Chuck trying to find the game on TV and all he could get on every station was the damn car chase. Eventually he gave up and was trying any station that wasn't showing the chase.
But to no avail, with one example, the local news was doing the weather: "And as you can see the cold front is coming in right behind the Ford Bronco . . ."
for the rest of time after the OJ mini series because it will never get better than what Schwimmer and Travolta gave us.
Wild day, especially for a NY sports fan. I remember getting home from high school to watch the Rangers victory parade my mom taped and being pumped for the critical Knicks game 5 coming up that night. My final hours not knowing what a Kardashian was.
I watched O.J. go for a second half TD ride at Notre Dame Stadium. He was a slasher.
That was a totally farcical post.
The 90's were the pinnacle for Howard.
The aftermath of the call was great too.
seemed like a most of the major news stories came out of LA. I actually remember waking up for school one morning and being struck by the images on television of the fires burning in LA from the riots.
