Most dark rums use coloring & additives but there are

a few brands that are reasonably priced and distill their product in a traditional manner.

Appleton Estate 12-year (Jamaica) is a great entry point dark rum in the $40 range. At a lower price point, Plantation 5-year and Doorly's 12-year both come in around $25.

If I were to create a starter five-bottle collection at a low price point, it would be:
Aged: Appleton 12 or Plantation 5
White: Plantation 3-star or Real McCoy
Overproof Dark: Smith & Cross Navy Strength
Overproof Light: Wray & Nephew
Agricole: Rhum Clemente VSOP

This will cover just about any cocktail combination you might need.

Also, I highly recommend Taylor's Velvet Falernum as a mixer for refreshing, summertime rum drinks. This cocktail is called the Barbados (not to be confused with Bajan Rum Punch):

2oz aged rum
1oz velvet falernum
1/2oz fresh lime juice
(and I usually add a dash of Angostura bitters)
served in an old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice
