Hail needs a very high cloud to form, it usually occurs during thunderstorms.

I can’t remember any time I’ve experienced thunderhail.

I’ve been in maybe 12 hail storms.

Are you confusing sleet and hail, hail almost exclusively

Forms in thunderstorms and it’s formation is completely different than sleet, which is a winter weather type of precipitation. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced hail without thunder. I have, however, experienced, thunder sleet in State College, PA during an elevated thunderstorm in March, the surface temperature was cold enough for the rain to freeze into sleet. That was a very rare meteorological event. With all that said, in Annapolis I’m sure you have experienced more than 12 sleet storms.
