Why do TV manufacturers use a slightly different product #

...for the same exact TV just because it's sold at a different retailer? For example, Sony labels a TV as "900H" for a particular TV sold at Best Buy, but "90CH" for the same TV sold at Costco. Is it to track which retailers are generating more sales?
