Our son ND96 was a member of the electric car team at the school. The car was donated (perhaps by one of the auto companies) and maintained and souped up by the students. They had a series of races with other colleges (Oklahoma and tOSU come to mind). We attended one of the races in Phoenix.

The technology was very new and we were (duh) shocked by how quietly they ran. IIRC the top speeds were about 130 mph and they race was about 10 laps with a mandatory stop to exchange batteries.

(Unnecessary bragging) Our son would have been a hero in NASCAR territory. His battery exchange system was potentially so good it that it was banned the next year. Basically the battery were on a slide out tray and workers had to disconnect, slide old out, slide new tray in and reconnect.

(Perhaps indicative of a problem) There was a large contingent of adults looking at the cars - from Japan and I didn't see any from the US.

The team also managed to soup up one of the golf cats, used frequently to impress the Domerettes, hence the monicker of the "Honeymobile".
