Milwaukee Brewers in the tiebreaker today...

In case anyone doesn't know and may be interested, the Milwaukee Brewers' head coach is Craig Counsell, who played at ND for Coach Pat Murphy at the beginning of a golden era in ND baseball, and then played on two MLB teams that won the World Series (Florida Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks, if I recall correctly). What some may not know is that his father, John Counsell, also played at ND, then played in the minor leagues for a while, and then was an assistant coach at ND in the late 60s and early 70s. He was one of the best guys ever (IMO). If you are curious to know what the dad looked like, just look at his son Craig. Spittin image.

Nice article in today's New York Times about Counsell and

Pst Murphy. To the uninitiated reading today's paper, one would get the impression that we must have a great baseball program

Pitching coach Derek Johnson would be a good HC candidate.

Extensive experience under Corbin at Vanderbilt. Experience in the Chicago, and surrounded by Notre Dame affinity in Milwaukee

I wonder what the salary comparison is.

An article just got posted on John Counsell.

played on, was always engaged in his community, respected by all, a fan favorite and considered a very cerebral player. Just perfect to become a great manager. Imagine bringing a small town team to the division championship in such a short period of time, starting with a recent history of mediocrity. He was my favorite player in mlb and is now by far my favorite manager. Incredible what his team accomplished this year. I understand he was very involved on the personnel side and has helped shape the team.

Prior to Murphy about all ND baseball had to hang its hat on

Was that Yaz went there for a semester and Ron Reed...since Murphy we've had World Series champs, multiple MLB regulars, and regular trips to NCAA tourney appearances...the last 10 yrs have been a barren wasteland with no relief in sight

Murphy then Mainieri then 12 years of wasteland-pretty soon

Go Brewers!...and Dodgers for other game (Axford from ND)

As I was watching the game I was thinking the same about Counsel and ND and wondering what other ND players are in the playoffs. Axford is the only active player still in and not sure he'll make the playoff roster given the Dodgers only used him 5 times. The sad thing is there were only 4 active 2018 MLB players who went to ND with Samardzija, AjJ Pollock, and Mancini joining Axford.

As for Counsell since I was born in Clevelend and I hated him for 1997, it's taken me a while to forgive my fellow alumnus. But I hate the Cubs more after 2016 so the Brewers and Counsell are my favorites today and all through the playoffs, atleast until the series if they meet the Indians.

ND took Axford's scholarship away after his junior year.

He finished at Canisius. Almost cannot claim him.
