today is the first day of the 2020 MLB draft

The first ever MLB draft was held in 1965....the draft was instituted as an equalizer...the rich teams (read Yankees) had dominated signing HS & college stars before the draft(the Yankees having won 14 of the last 16 AL pennants at that time)..

The Chicago White Sox had the 17th pick in the 1st rd.

The White Sox wanted a catcher.....Johnny Bench was available.

The Sox chose Ken Plesha C University of Notre Dame

Johnny Bench went to the Reds in the 2nd rd.

Plesha hit .186 in 4 minor league seasons
