When you fail to do what's right, and we all do so everyday, don't make excuses. Own up to your failure and try to do better next time. Making excuses for your failure usually leads down a dark road.

Holtz was a tough guy to play for...but after the career was over players loved him. A friend played OG for him and said he was a tough taskmaster and not a warm and fuzzy guy,

I asked him, “would you have your son play for him?”

“Absolutely...Lou Holtz taught me how to win”

Fast forward five years from that conversation and Holtz spoke at our company’s national meeting and I was able to meet him. “Coach, I played at Rockhurst” and he immediately brings up three guys (Te’o of which were teammates of mine. I told him the story about one of his former players saying that Holtz taught him how to win. He laughed and said the guy was always a winner, that ND and he just helped reveal it.

I’ve got a video of his speech and try to watch it once per year.
