I heard that the collars thought there was only one lake at ND, because of the snow cover, so it was "du lac" (singular), instead of plural.

Not sure if that was true.

I had always heard (incorrectly) that the area between the two lakes was a swampland and the cause of malaria and other diseases. The linked article from ND magazine goes into the story of du lac vs du lacs in detail. Apparently Fr Sorin did know, but chose the the singular.
