Do family events with that 4 to 5 hour commitment that A requires, and fast watch TIVO after family moves on to other things. I’ve become quite adept at avoiding the real time score.
Was drifting towards C there for a while, especially in 2016.
Still a long way from the A it used to be.
Indoctrinated early, with sons that are third generation ND. And while not a BK fan, I almost thought last year's undefeated regular season might have changed the tenor a little bit on this board.
Football season ND is my priority. Always has, probably always will be.
The version of me from 10 years ago would probably be pretty disgusted with the kind of fan I've turned into, but that 10-year evolution has been driven by several factors:
1. Watching ND over the past decade simply hasn't been as much "fun" as it was in the years that preceded it. The live game day experience has been overly Disney-fied, and gotten much too expensive. There are too many shitty games on the schedule, and we lose too many of them. And the program--along with its current head coach--carries too damn much baggage, which saps enjoyment out of even the (infrequent) big wins.
2. College football, in general, is less enjoyable now. Exploited players, dirtbag coaches, locked-out teams, buy games, TV networks dictating kickoff times, etc. have all been net negatives for the sport. I think even the playoff mode has been a net negative, and I certainly wouldn't have predicted that 10 years ago.
3. I've got kids now, and I enjoy spending time with them more than I enjoy watching the Irish on TV. When those two options conflict, hanging with the kids wins. I thought I'd always build my fall schedules around the Irish football team, but that's not what's happened...and I'm totally fine with that.
While (2) and (3) are less (if at all) in ND's control, (1) remains disappointing.
The fish rots from the head down, needs to deeper systemic change.
I have not been in the seats my Dad had since the early 50's for the past 6 or 7 years.
Dreams die hard, but they do die.
A bit of trepidation going into this season after two reasonably successful seasons.
I anticipate continuing to work part-time on weekends this fall, as I have done since early May. Therefore, I am bound to miss parts of several games. This would have been unimaginable during the Holtz years, (before I had a family and when I was merely responsible for myself.) However, the extra earnings are a crucial supplement to my full time job income and allow my wife and I some welcome peace of mind. Also, our son is now a junior in college, so the extra dough helps! But don’t feel too bad for me. My wife and son got me two tix (as a combo Birthday/Fathers Day present) to the Michigan game in Ann Arbor on October 26. That will be a nice weekend for me with my son.
This started a few years ago.
C
I'm going to watch every game I can realistically watch and DVR watch the rest.
I may miss watching live because of family events, but will listen to the radio if I can or watch a replay or extended highlights later. I am frustrated like many on this board by the lack of elite-level success over the past 25 years, but that won't affect my love of ND football. Call me a glutton for punishment if you will, but I will continue watching, win or lose.
If I can record a game I will. If we win I will watch it. If I'm feeling well I'll watch, at least the beginning, live. Late games are hard on me, I'm often asleep early. And I usually cannot get by without an afternoon nap.
I used to be an "A" but am going downhill.
games. It is easier and faster to watch on tape and fast forward through the commercials and dead time.
I am past firing Kelly. He is a symptom, not the problem. Schwarbrick and Jenkins won’t hire a great coach Firing Kelly won’t solve anything.
Surprised by the number of A responses given the comments on the board the last few years.
B for me just because of other things going on and my general attitude about sports viewing. If September 14th is a nice fall day, I'm likely to have something else I'd prefer doing than to sit down at 2:30 to watch the Irish take on New Mexico.
Georgia at 8pm is a different story.
And if you're a B, then why are you reading an ND football message board in July?
I am closer to C than I am to A (and 20 years ago I was firmly ensconced in the A camp)
for the past 55 years, everything else yielded to gametime. Lately, I make an effort to watch, but sometimes I fall asleep, or decide to go out for dinner, or just watch the video later. My interest level is highest at the start of each new season, but eventually it wanes as I figure out whether its a Kellyesque 8-5 year with head-scratching losses to inferior opponents ending in a minor bowl victory, or a "magical" undefeated regular season punctuated by a prison-rape before a national television audience.
I keep trying to give it up, but I love ND football, despite JS and Kelly.
hope the players are successful.
I haven’t watched consistently since mid-2016. I barely recognize any players on the team now. I’ll be mildly amused to see how BK blows it again this year if we’re near the top. This is not me rooting against the team. This is my hatred of BK.
And I'm close to making plans that would possibly result in me missing the Southern Cal game. That never used to be a possibility.
Also- Michigan sucks
I guess the "F" is appropriate.
It's been years since I've scheduled my Saturdays around ND Football, but if I am home when the game is on, I'll watch it. I won't turn down plans, give up family time, etc. due to the game.
It doesn't help that my sons have no interest in watching which is something I never would have anticipated. But after going all the way to South Bend to see us lose to Duke, I can't really blame them.
I actually in more interested in the women's basketball team than the football team.
I no longer plan my day around the game. If I’m home and it’s on, then great.
If I have time, I'll turn on a game, and not necessarily with regard to the criteria in the original post, but just about everything else in life takes precedence.
As long as that pedophile enabler continues to work for the university I’m not watching any games of any sport.
I will record every game (except one) and watch the victories with a liberal use of fast forward through the interminable commercials.
I've done this for years because I find it painful to watch Notre Dame football because I compare today's team to the teams I watched as an undergrad.
I will attend the ND/Duke game because it's local and to support our club.
Like one when I can feel my blood pressure spiking so I go out mow the lawn instead of watching us squeak by a totally inferior opponent? Or one where I go outside so as to not become the “bad ND Daddy” in front of the kids?
that might interfere with one or two games.
OK - so actually I teach every Saturday from 8-5PM - but any game worthwhile is going to be a night game.
Every other games should be a win or else some of those night games could be a slaughter.
If we don't get kicked out of whatever bar we are patronizing.
miss one or two. No plans to take in one in person this year, not home, not away.
