I see at least 8, though a few are MSU fans.
(Oh, and of course, Michigan sucks)
in 1989.
Actually, in the same game, Stan Smagala allowing Thrill Hill to catch a 44 yard pass on 3rd and 43 would rank up there too...
The 1999 Bobby Brown excess celebration penalty after a TD gave Michigan excellent field position to score a last second TD and win....
And not covering for the fake field goal against MSU in 2010 in OT.
AND OF COURSE, MICHIGAN REALLY REALLY SUCKS!!!
Sorry, that was multiple plays.
Ara told the kicker not to kick to Davis, and he did it anyways. The result was horrific.
I was there. First football game I ever saw.
Wasn't the only play that led to that loss, but it was a key one in a long sequence of them.
Kelly brings him in cold...we are about to score and Crist fumbles...Southern Cal returns it for a TD. We go in the tank and get killed.
And then losing in OT. That has to be up there.
Also known by an unflattering nickname.
That likely cost ND the USC game the following week, a major bowl appearance and potentially a Top 5 finish based on how the rest of the season played out.
And to make matters worse, if I recall correctly, the safety decision didn't even guarantee a win. I believe LSU still had a shot with a hail mary at the end.
I don't think ND has had a singular disaster play like the OP that swung a game as it happened, at least not in recent years, but that play almost certainly swung the following week's game, so it's the best answer.
My Dad had to work.... big Wendy's shindig (I got to eat at Benihana's with Dave Thomas that week and met the actual Wendy). We got up at the ass crack of dawn to watch the game. I was so sad my Mom got me TWO shaved ice's from the pool cabana.
A great player was hurt because of that stupid play. If you want to take a safety, take a delay of game penalty to move 5 yards closer to end zone, and then snap it to your punter standing in the end zone. What Davie did was risky in all sorts of ways. Idiot.
Originally the plan was the have Jarious run around in the end zone, then step out when the clock ran out.
Unfortunately, LSU got much more pressure than we planned, he actually got sacked/hurt, and the clock didn't get to zero, so we had to give the ball back.
It was f'ing baffling watch happen live, and worse after the fact.
Kelly inexplicably calls a pass into the end zone by a backup QB when all he needed was a FG to win. The pass is intercepted, and Tulsa wins. Tulsa. Fucking Tulsa.
clear exactly who our new coach is as a playcaller and person.
(and might I add, ballsy) trick play to be a boneheaded play. Surprising? yes Disappointing? certainly. Not really stupid though, on the order of the Michigan punter
Our defensive alignment on that play was idiotic. If they kicked the FG, the worst thing that could happen was they tied the game and we went to another OT. It was a pretty long FG with, I believe, a pretty inexperienced kicker. You simply cannot leave yourself open to a fake on that play. We set up to block the kick when we should have been in a much more conservative alignment.
It couldn't happen to a nicer collection of flaming twat moles
