That likely cost ND the USC game the following week, a major bowl appearance and potentially a Top 5 finish based on how the rest of the season played out.

And to make matters worse, if I recall correctly, the safety decision didn't even guarantee a win. I believe LSU still had a shot with a hail mary at the end.
