How good was Anthony Johnson, sheesh

Move aside his ability running the ball inside for a moment. On Rocket‘s touchdown on the reverse in the 90 Orange Bowl what he did was outstanding on the play. ND fakes a run play inside from the I formation. The guard on that side pulls to influence Colorado D that way. Johnson cuts the blitzing linebacker who fires through the vacated guards spot. He then gets up off the ground and heads around right end and cuts the Colorado cornerback who had followed Rocket across the field when Rocket reversed behind the formation on the snap. The second block along with Grunhard leading out on the play side corner springs the play for a TD. At the 1 minute mark of this video focus on Johnson. Outstanding.

Really, really good. Automatic in short yardage. Plus. *

AJ would block the end every time, not most of the time, every time.

Or something like that.

Another fine resident of Keenan Hall *

Definitely a case of me being awe-struck hanging around with him. Couldn’t have been a nicer fella.

He’d play pool with his shirt off. Unreal physique.

We called him "chains"

As in, give it to Anthony Johnson and he'll move the chains.

The man never lost yards on a carry. It’s a fact....

I’d be happy to be proven wrong but in my memory he gained positive yards every single time he was handed the ball.

Always fell forward and usually took 2 dudes to get him

He wasn't the fastest or most gifted athletically but a very physical runner and fundamentally as sound as you can get. Like you said an excellent blocker (a willing blocker) and excellent inside runner.

The 9 minute drive to ice the game was beautiful.

AJ played a prominent role. NBC kept showing the helpless Colorado sideline. Hard to believe it has been 30 years.

Yeah, that was a thing of beauty by AJ. *

One of the all-time underrated players at ND

He was automatic on 3rd or 4th and short.

He would not be denied and delivered every single time.

Anthony Johnson was underrated

He had a terrific game against Miami in 1988. Along with having some clutch theirs down runs, he recovered the onside kick Miami tried near the end of the game.

One of my favorites! *
