The inaugural members started this organization in 1900 - with the usual suspects (3 Public & 9 Private - 6 Ivies). Below are the Universities that became members prior to WWI 10 Public (6 Big 10) & 10 Private (added Northwestern). There are now 71 members in the AAU.

1909:

- University of Iowa
- University of Kansas
