Keep in mind that hockey is a regional sport, especially at the college level. Schools like UMD, SCSU, etc. are major hockey programs, and there are only 60 D1 hockey teams. The best players want to go to the best teams regardless of the academic offerings or perceived prestige of the university. Many are older than the typical college student and many are hoping to play pro hockey, and going to these smaller regional universities is not a problem in that regard. The excellent hockey players at this level are really into hockey above most everything else, or they would not have gotten to this level.
