My two encounters with Coach Holtz

The first was at the Crosby golf tournament at Bermuda Run, near Clemmons, NC. I think he came in for that event nearly every year. My wife and I drove out there just to get a look at him on the course. We caught up with him coming off the green. He wore his classic navy blue ND cap with the gold interlocking letters. Some yokel yelled out, "Hey Lou, where ya git that hat?" He tipped his cap to him. I brought a Notre Dame program from a football game I attended and asked him to sign it for my dad (class of '48). He was very courteous and obliged. Several years later when I was working at a local radio station, I got a ticket to a Chamber of Commerce dinner at the Greensboro Coliseum where Coach was the featured speaker. I got a chance to meet Lou again during the cocktail hour before the dinner and he was just great, shook my hand, big smile, I asked him how the defense was going to be that year and he spent several minutes talking ND football with me and several other people near me. His speech was terrific and his words continue to motivate me all these years later. I love that guy and pray for the best possible outcome.
