IIRC, one of their best players transferred after 98 to play at a Division 2 school, so they were not able to run it back completely.

They were a few years ahead of me, but they won my freshman year. It was such a big deal for Stanford to have this all "non-athlete" team win the tournament. But every one of those guys could really play.

Obviously, when you reach the Final Four of that tournament, you will see 20 truly great basketball players. Definitely one of the things that surprised me the most at ND. Many of the non-scholarship students are still excellent athletes.
