As conveyed to me per Father Hesburgh, in 2005 Lou was in his office for a visit and at one point asked "...Father what can I do to help.." Father responded by giving Lou information on a non-profit that I had started, along with several students/alums, that provided care for children in Lesotho (southern Africa) that were orphaned/infected by HIV/AIDS. Father Ted had graciously recalled when he supported me as a student with his personal check of $250 in 1976 to do summer volunteer work in Ghana. That relationship eventually led to him becoming the Honorary Chair of our non-profit - Touching Tiny Lives. Per Father, he told Lou "... every time you come on campus write these folks a check." For the next three years we received, unsolicited, a check from Lou for $5,000. The fourth year I was in line at the Bookstore for a Lou book signing event and when I got in front of Lou I introduced myself as the Chair of TTL and verbally thanked him for his gracious gifts. His response was to look at me with a big smile, point his pen, and say "I need to get you another check." Within a week another $5,000 check arrived. Lou.... not only a legendary coach but a gracious soul who loved Notre Dame and so many others less blessed.
