UConn, Tennessee, and Southern Cal

are the only schools to repeat as women's NCAA champions. USC won the 2nd and 3rd NCAAs, in 1983 and 1984; they lost the 1986 final and haven't been back to the Final Four since then. Tennessee won in 1996-97-98 and 2007-08. UConn won in 2002-03-04, 2009-10, and 2013-14-15-16.

It would have been so nice to join that group. No other school has come closer.

FB and fencing are the only two ND sports to achieve

consecutive championships, correct?

Women's soccer came close in the 1990's, just like the women today. Not sure any other sport has come close.

I know of no others

Football did it twice, in 1929-30 and 1946-47 (with a No. 2 finish in 1948 and then another NC in 1949).

You're conceding the '48 title to Michigan?

Don't do that.

Both teams were 9-0 when the final AP poll was taken in late November.

They deserved it as much as the early 1948 "unofficial" poll and the influenza epidemic/WW I 1918 poll (they played 5 games that year).

It might be the only thing I concede to them

I was not around in 1948 (surprise!), but I see 2 reasons to give Michigan the nod over ND for 1948.

1. ND tied its finale at Southern Cal. Granted, it was after the final poll was taken, but it does tend to vindicate the final result.

2. Michigan did better against common opponents. ND won vs. Purdue 28-27, vs. MSU 26-7, at Navy (Baltimore) 41-7, at Indiana 42-6, and vs. Northwestern 12-7. Michigan won at Purdue 40-0, at MSU 13-7, vs. Navy 35-0, vs. IU 54-0, and vs. Northwestern 28-0,

ND earned the 1947 championship, but Michigan was a tad better on paper in 1948. The final, official votes were not close either year.

I will fight for ND to be recognized as national champions in 1953, 1993, and even 1989 before I ever get around to 1948.
