Congrats to Baylor and Notre Dame on a Great Game
by hempfield75 (2019-04-07 21:07:02)

I am just going to make some comments on the loss.

...There are keys to each game that you must beat to win. We played a
great Baylor team. When you play a team as good as Baylor. You must play
up to you opponent not down. Here are just some of the things I felt went
wrong.

1) Do not start slow and allow them to take a lead, especially a large one.

2) Block out and get the bigs away from the basket. Never happened. They
second chance thoughts when I thought we were getting the ball back.

3) In an earlier post I was joking about missing bunnies but tried to make
a point it was a serious concern. Well we did miss a heck of a lot of
bunnies. I do not know how many. I do know we would have won the game. Do
we ever practice layups. The position under the basket is wrong, location
of the shot is wrong, and the feel of the shot is wrong.

4) Missed FT's came back to haunt us. No one was exempted.

5) We never really got into the zone. First it was Arike carrying us the
Marina. We never put it together as a team.

6) We did not play team ball tonight. We played hard but made a lot of
mistakes at key points of the game and at the wrong time.

7) As a senior heavy team, I thought our mental game and focus was not
up to our usual standards. Not control loose balls, wrong pass or type of
pass, bad shot or wrong shot selection.

8) Communications. We did not cover open shooters well. Communications
between players seemed a little off. I remember a few times Marina
tried to get someone to move in the zone with no luck.

9) One of the hardest things to do in team ball is have the same person
win a game at the end. Arike was put in that position for the second
straight year. Unfortunately, it did not work out for her this time. You
can not put the blame on her. She had a great game and would not have
been in position to win without her. We had many opportunities to take
control of the game with 3 minutes left in the game. Every time down the
court we found a way not to score. Others had opportunity to win the game
but we did not get it done.

...Seasons over we had a great year. Hey we did win the Chicago Regional.
Plus we scared the heck out of Baylor. It was a great but not fun game to
watch. Now we can start thinking about next year.

...I really am excited about next year. We will be better than what most
people anticipate. We do need to finish strong in recruiting. Do not
think we are going against Baylor on any player.

Thanks

I could be wrong, but

I have the feeling we peaked against UConn. Just seemed to lack our usual energy and focus. Just seemed to me, we were missing that little something all night long.

My Take

We lost the mental game. They were stronger. We rushed shots, took the
wrong shot, wrong person taking the shot, missing to man FTs and Bunnies.
Many of the shots seemed forced and hitting the backboard or net wrong.
There was to much fumbling with the ball and weird out muscled more times
than I would have wanted. In my personal opinion that is part of the
mental game. I just did not think it would happen to this team.

...There is one other explanation. They put to much pressure on themselves
to win BTB NC's. As fans, we are partly to blame for that. We are always
talking about it. I am guilty in the first degree on that.

...I feel very bad for all those players and coaches. That is going to
be one heck of a long plane ride home. Been there.

...I also been in a game I lost at the last second thinking we won the
game. Official said our receiver was out. We checked, he was not. But
if you have never played sports. You have no idea how terrible the pain
is. The Pope and God himself can not get the pain to go away. At that
moment. Forty years down the run yes.

...My feeling since was I would rather loose by 1000 points a last second
play.

Let's give credit to Baylor for that.

And yet, we were right there at the end

Baylor was so much better tonight than what UConn showed

it’s not even funny. Baylor was unstoppable. They’d have destroyed UConn.

Well, They Did in February. *
