WNBA Salaries.
by TWO (2019-04-17 17:18:08)

Picked this up in an article about Breanna Stewart's ruptured achilles tendon that will keep her out of the 2019 WNBA Season.

She's is the best player in the WNBA, as we all know former #1 overall draft pick. She doesn't even make G-League money.

Like most WNBA players, Stewart also competes overseas to maximize her income. Stewart made $56,793 in base salary last season with the Storm, earning bonuses of a $15,000 for being MVP, $11,025 for winning the WNBA title, $10,000 for being All-WNBA first team and $2,500 for being in the All-Star Game.

She was slated to make $64,538 this WNBA season in base salary.

Recently read that WBB overseas is 3X or 4X higher

than WNBA. Don’t know if that is true, but sounds right.

I really feels for these woman. It is just not right what these women have
to go through to see their dreams come true.

...I live near Seattle. You can not live there on 56,000 a years. Subtract
union dues, agents, taxes, other dues. She will clear half of that.

...To go about 8,000 miles or so away in places that language, culture,
family separation, fatigue just to name a few sacrifices that are made
just to play the game they love. Some of the places they play are not
real big fan of the U.S. and have serious political and safety issues.

...NBA players are spoiled big brats. Their salaries are off the wall.
Most do not know the meaning of the TEAM. They are about ME.

...The women are barely over minimum wages for a professional athlete.
So who is making the money. NBA selfish players and owners. It is off the
wall nuts, that management would argue about increasing player salaries.
I know, it might take away some of the millions they could give to them-
selves and NBA players.

...Talk about out sourcing. Now we are out sourcing our most precious
source, a human being. Just is not right.

...Nothing against Jackies decision to forgo her final year. But in the
long run, is it worth it.How much can she take playing basketball year
round with little to no break.

...I hope these women take a serious stand on this new collective
bargaom agreement. Do no settle for nickles and dimes. The owners are
not losing money or they would not have a WNBA.

...Wilson just signed a contract her in Seattle for over 35 million a YEAR.
That is just for 16 games. Brianna Stewart, the best womens BB player
is just over 56,000 for over 30 games. There are a lot of zeroes missing
from BS is salary. At least in the WNBA they know how to spell the word
TEAM.

...I do not follow pro sports like I use to. Salaries, behavior, attitude,
and TEAM are just a few of the reason I pay little attention to pro
sports. I am quite happy with my college sports.

Thanks

Just a point of clarification...

Less than half the WNBA teams are owned by an NBA team

I thought that was one of the conditions of establishing the WNBA. They
finance the WNBA and control interest. Am I wrong on that? I thought one
of the sticking points by owners was WNBA salaries had to be maintained
at a certain level. Am I way out in left field on this?

...If that is not the case. What is keeping the salaries at a ridiculous
low amount.

...This is really a sad point. Before I retired. I was making more money
than Breanna Stewert and any other WNBA star coming out since. I am not
shy to say I was a supervisor with the Post Office.

Where do you get the idea the owners aren't losing $$?

And at the low end of the salary spectrum, players are making what comes out to $2500.00 a week ($40,000 for a 16 week season). Not great as far as pro sports go, but someone in their early 20s should be able to get by on that.

Six franchises in this league have folded. Many of these teams are subsidized by NBA teams. The league has the upper hand a bit because they can readily fill a small amount of rosters in the league without much difficulty.

I wish the players made more money. But I don't think there are any franchises that are killing it.

No one plays in the WNBA in order to get rich

I'm guessing that most of the ND women's basketball players would make more money if they took a job related to their major after they graduated.

There is also endorsement and commercial appearance money

And the best players can make 10 times the WNBA base in Europe. I believe Taurasi had a reported $1.5 million salary in Russia

That is why I am confused when a player like Jackie forgoes a year
to go pro. I just can not see the positive in doing that. Sure she can make
decent money overseas. But why should she have to. Owners need to get off
their high horses and pay these women properly.

...What is it going to take for them to open their eyes. Heaven forbid
something terrible has to happen for owners to get real.

...I have been to 24 different countries over the years. Not everyone
loves or respects americans. Playing in Turkey is not like playing in
New York. Apples and Oranges. My mistake rotten oranges.

...I have been following womens baskeball since the Louisiana Tech,
Immaculatta (sp) days. I even remember watching Myers from UCLA
and Nancy Lieberman. The quality of play has changed leaps and bounds
through the years. The passing, shooting, rebounding, cutting, fast breaks,
you name it and it is so much better. Do not want to take away from
yesterdays stars. The game is totally different and much more fun
and interesting to watch. Did not have web sites and boards to follow
and discuss your favorite team.

...That is a good question for board members who followed woemens
basketball way back then. What is your take on the differences, chances
and quality of basketball then and now. Just curious.

I literally cannot respond to everything you've put in this

thread.

But simply, the league loses money and is only in existence due to subsidies from the NBA.

It's supply and demand - there's no money in ticket sales, TV revenue, etc. for the WNBA. How would they pay the players any more than they do?

I think the overseas opportunities are fantastic and the way to go since they play a short, 3-4 month season here in the USA.
