OK, it seems clear.
Sniezek had 5 TOs and 8 assts. She refuses to shoot, which explains why we kept inbounding to her in the last 45 seconds.
the ball underneath when the opposition is packed in. Passing up open shots & then turning the ball over is driving me nuts. When Cole & Marta are in the game the opposition only has to guard 3 players. I don't care if Gilbert was sick or not, how do keep throwing up brick after brick? Sam did not shoot enough in the 1st half and at times it seems like they won't pass it to her, instead driving in and having their shot blocked on the drive or turning it over forcing it underneath.
A few other points:
1. NDLAW88 makes the point that "Mik was playing through something ...." The fact that she only played 21 minutes tends to confirm that.
2. Maverick makes a number of excellent points: (a) Passing up open shots; (b) when Cole and Marta don't shoot,"the opposition only has to guard 3 players;" (c) it's counterproductive to force the ball down low when the defense is packed in; worse, it leads to turnovers; Sam needed to shoot more in first half. Great points.
3. It's unlikely there will be post-season tournaments for us. Danielle yesterday had 7 points, 2 rebounds in 17 minutes. I have opined before that she needs to get between an opposing player and the basket, drop down and make herself big, and get her fanny into the person she's boxing out. Until she does, she's going to get 2 rebounds in 17 minutes.
That being said, we need to find out what she can do offensively. Her strength seems to be shooting the three, rather like Erin Boley. I'd like to see MM put her out on the floor and tell that she is to hunt her shot, and is expected to shoot no less than 3 threes per half. We need to find out if she can hit 35% of her threes. I would like to know if Danielle can play aggressively. I would love MM to tell her, that if she makes a mistake while aggressive, she'll stay on the floor. She'll get pulled only if she plays tentatively. Right now, she looks as if she's afraid to make a mistake.
Then this summer, I would work her fanny off, teaching her to rebound. I am not ready to give up on her. It took Kat Nelson awhile.
I would show her films of Kiltey's play last night, and tell her to do likewise. If she gets aggressive, I think she can really help us.
Oversimplification, but this is fundamentals and repetition. Headfakes, ballfakes, bodyfakes, get the defender in the air - you'll get the foul if you don't make the shot.
result of ND guards driving into a well positioned 6-5 center. In addition to using some kind of fake when needed, there needs to be more emphasis on drive and dish.
...should be an emphasis of summer sessions. I'm not being tongue in cheek or kidding. Most of what you, Doggie and btd bring up has been apparent to the board all season.
Everything fromt technique to repeition and decision-making (from the decision to drive to that of "to shoot or dish") needs to be reviewed.
Too bad Arike, Marine and Jackie will be playing in the WNBA. Maybe the Irish can get other excellent drive and/or dishers like Maddie Cable or Nasty to help out.
This catches my attention even more with the arrivals of Alli Campbell and Maddy Westbeld, two players with mid- to long-range jump shooting prowess. Campbell will be a natural at splitting to the wing, while Maddy will hopefully be trailing the play (after getting, ahem, the rebound to start the break).
While we're at this camp, with the new personnel, I suggest the Irish get back to having the player (usually the 4 or other forward) at the foul line/elbow/top of the key get the ball and turn and face the basket. I realize that Mik has certain traits, but the amount of time she spends wating for folks to cut off her and drive takes forever. And when she does turn, everyone knows her options are limited and they circle her.
With her jump shoting ability, Danielle should be turning and looking for that shot ASAP.
Aw, in reality, I'm hoping MM just puts Maddy Westbeld there and hope the subtle nature of the position has seeped into her by osmosis over the years!
But it is frustrating when it's fundamentals that are killing us.
