Last year Liverpool made the finals and had zero chance to win the league. This year 4 teams made the quarterfinals with two having zero chance to win the league.

Winning the league now requires the kind of squad depth that the likes that City has bankrolled or a bit of luck regarding significant injuries like Liverpool this season. Heck City is so deep they amassed almost 100 points without KDB much of this season. Meanwhile Liverpool’s front three and VVD were healthy almost all season.

Whereas the UCL requires an elite squad that can get through much fewer games. I think it’s more likely for Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs to build a UCL squad than it is to match City’s depth over the course of an entire season.
