Are you offsides if you are past the endline?

In the USMNT disaster against Venezuela, Zardes overran a play and was past the endline with another Venezuela defender also past the endline with the play and a shot still going on.

My question is, if any two defenders are also past the endline, is there still a "behind the penultimate defender rule"? When can that offensive player come back onto the field of play and have an impact on the game?

Does an offensive player past the endline still need to be "in front" of the 2 defenders who are past the endline? Or since 2 defenders are past the endline, does this negate any offsides from happening even to an offensive player also behind the endline?
