his dad's teammate at U of O when they won the 1977 NCAA cross country NC. They were both big in Eugene when I went there for grad school as Bill Dellinger, the Ducks coach, coached both of them after they graduated.

This Olympic gold was an awesome strategic race by Matt. He controlled the speed of the race from the beginning and had the 400 speed to hold everyone off for the win. I was screaming when I streamed the race live on my computer out in the west coast. I like the BBC track announcers a lot better than NBC but I did watch the NBC broadcast later. I still loved that race.

Was clearly a tactical race, but unbelievable slow. Matt got a bit luck as two of the favorites got into a scrap, but regardless it was a great win for USA T&F!
