He is a "tweener" right now, not seen as fast enough to be an elite miler, not enough experience to be an elite 5K runner. The collegiate running calendar might actually help him by exposing him to more racing opportunities at various distances.

I think it would be beneficial to Yared as a runner plus a free Masters degree.
