A nice article in the CJ about Yared and his days at Manual High School here in Louisville. A nice young man with a bright future.

Came in second 3:35 or so

No one forced the pace, and Yared and Cole Hacker from Oregon separated themselves from the field at the end. Hacker, a freshman, will be a major force in US running in the future with a tremendous closing burst. Hacker came back in the 10K and finished 4th with a closing kick from way back. His only loss this year was to Yared.

Dylan Jacobs of ND was running 9th or 10th in the 10K - not sure if he ended up in the top 10.

Jacobs was 8th at one point but ended in 11th place. *

It's Hocker, and he will be a force for the Ducks next few

years as you say. I also agree with you if the Bama runner had done what he did at the semis leading that race for the first 3 laps, Yared would have been better off. In this race Yared had to do most of the work leading most of the way. Still he ended up running over 1.5 seconds faster than his semi record Weds ending just .25 off Hocker's time (a Personal Best) who was only .05 off Sydney Maree's 40 year NCAA championship record. They are both very good and beat everyone else in a very fast field by over 1.7 seconds.

As for the other race which Hocker ran it was the 5000M, not 10K which was run Weds. Oregon went 1 & 4 in that race and Hocker's kick again was evident to pass several runners to end up 4th, especially after winning the 1500 less than an hour earlier. That race was even faster from previous National Championships as the winner Oregon's Cooper Teare broke the meet record by over 6 seconds! Two other runners who were close to Teare also broke that record and Hocker at 4th was 1/2 second from the meet record set in 2014. ND's Dylan Jacobs ended up 11th, about 4 seconds off of scoring. Still it was a Personal Best for him and in fact the top 12 runners also had PBs for the 5K. Helluva race.

The ESPN article attached did say the Yared/Cole battle for the 1500 was the most anticipated event of the Meet. Hope they both make the Olympics, but that field will be even faster. As for the Ducks I'm getting annoyed at LSU for keep knocking us out of the top as they did it twice this week in Eugene. 1st baseball with LSU beating the Ducks in the regional Sunday and Monday and now at Hayward, Ducks end up second to LSU.

Well he just ran the fastest semi 1500m in history in Eugene

at the NCAA championships. Yared earned the fastest semifinal time in NCAA outdoor championship history with a 3:37.36 time. Should do well in the finals.

Voetz just missed qualifying for the 800m as he was third in the 3rd heat which was run too slow as Charlie Hunter (who won the heat), the 800m indoor champ from Oregon, tried to get a teammate in. Sam then pushed the race but he was edged out by the Auburn runner.

Meanwhile, Sam Voelz probably gets to the 800m final

if he just leans at the end, but he didn't, and the guy next to him leaned his way into second place and into the finals.

Was it Molly Huddle who missed out on a medal at some prestigious meet in NYC because she started celebrating before she had actually crossed the line? Somehow, we have to get the runners to remember to run the race all the way through and lean. There was an 800m runner at our kids' HS who missed a title because the other guy leaned at the end.

Totally agree and he's so tall he could have dived and won.

I was hoping he'd pull it off. Oh well.

Correction of my post: it was the 10K world championships

where Molly Huddle goofed up, so it was even more prestigious than I recalled.

Yared has a chance to beat the 40 year old meet record

held by Sydney Maree of Villanova which he ran in 1981. Attached is the official results.

I saw that as well.

Weather for todays race looks a bit dicey. Rain and in the low 60's high 50's.

Not sure if that is good conducive to fast times.

Hocker and Nuguse both came darn close, just .05 off. *

Not something you hear about many track athletes .... or many "student" athletes at other schools
