After 4th (of 5) round of Saber the lead is 16 pts over Harv
by Radi-skull (2022-03-27 10:06:55)

Doubtful ND will have a fencer in the finals.

ND in 6th and 7th with 12 pts each with one round left (4 bouts). 4th currently has 15 pts.

Some too early analysis: ND will win by around 20 pts

Because of 1 weapon at each school.

Harvard had 17 pts in W Saber to NDs 34. But they only had 1 fencer. Had they had 2 qualified it would have at least been a little more competitive

Columbia 17 pts in W Epee to NDs 34; as pointed out by IRISHNYER, 8 out of 30 on the firstvday killed them

Princeton men in general were worse than their women, but 13 pts in M saber to NDs 30 was the killer.

Appears ND men will be shut out of the individual titles

Itkin lost 3 of his last 4 in foil and Candreva just dropped 1 of his last 4 in Epee (probably needed to win out and have lucky loses above him).

None of the ND mens fencers finished in the top four. *

I guess we were nice hosts: 5 visitors got individual NCs,

but ND got one (Hsieh-Epee) as well as repeating in the overall team championship. Friday Princeton got the Foil NC and Harvard got Sabre NC in the women's round. Today tOSU got men's Epee NC and while the Foil final is on ESPN now, but it will go to Columbia who had both finalists. Sabre will conclude after that between Duke and Harvard. ND men ended up 8 and 11 in Epee, 5 & 6 in Foil, and 6 & 7 in Sabre. With today's finishes plus the 6 on Friday means ND ended up with 12 All Americans: 3 1st team (placing 1-4), 8 2nd team (5-8), and 1 3rd team (9-12).

Excellent results for the Fencing team.

Depth is key in this tournament format and ND has had it

consistently over the years, especially in qualifying 2 athletes per weapon.

It wasn't always that way. In the '77 and '78 titles, ND qualified the allowable maximum of a single athlete per weapon. Fortunately the team returned experienced '77 tournament championns who played a significant role in the '78 championship.

Yes, high quality depth at each weapon earned the trophy *

Itkin should be in 3rd so still a chance for an individual championship.

4th round of epee not finalized but ND will net 0 at worst

ND with 5 pts and harvard and prinecton can only get 5 in the round at most with their remaining fencers

So with 24 bouts remaining ND should have at least an 18 pt lead on Columbia and 19 on Harvard.

Any combination of 7 from our wins and Columbia's loses will keep us out of reach

Edit: Magic # down to 4.

ND already has 3 pts in the last round of Saber. Columbiab has not lost but Harvard has lost two.

ND now has insurmountable lead

Based on epee 4th round and current progress through 5th round of Saber and Foil.

Still possible for 1 individual Epee (Candreva) but not probable.

Sounds great. Thanks for the updates. Are you at the event? *

Watching Friday with the women was fun with each weapon championships but with no announcers I couldn't figure out team scoring. The link seemed to help with individual scores and results, but I couldn't figure out team points. I'm glad you figured it out and I'm glad ND will get another National Championship. After yesterday's disappointments in WBB and hockey, it'sgreat to know we can rely on ND fencing.

Congrats ND Fencing! *
