They want the tennis program to be entirely self-funded via endowment? As the article points out, you're looking at needing $50M given the typical 5% draw. Good luck to them. Big difference between being able to raise $5M and being able to raise $50M.

Absent a mega donor who proactively insists on endowing a tennis program to the tune of $50M, I would think they’ll be stuck trying to cobble that amount together from many, many donors at the $1M-ish and under range, maybe with a lead gift in the $5M range.

The current conference alignments are primarily or exclusively based on football revenue (or basketball revenue if the school doesn't play football). Teams with a large number of games and large squads are money sinks, especially after the two West Coast schools entered the ACC. It's especially true if those teams are not nationally-ranked. I hope and don't expect ND to drop sports in the near term - hard to defend with the revenue we receive.
My old coaches built that program and some of my friends played for them.
They were very successful in their own pond.
we're running out of real estate west of Twyckenham. If that factors in, the tennis facilities take up quite a bit of space for a program that makes no money and only has around 20 total student athletes.

I heard over the weekend they’re (M/W Tennis) practicing at Penn High School.
That's unbelievable. Holy shit, I guess all of the money really does go to the football program.
ND paid to refurbish/refinish the courts to use once the new sports performance facility started construction.
so both tennis teams have their outdoor practices at high school facilities. The indoor facility is still used for practices and matches.
I heard that there are plans to build new tennis facilities on the west side of campus near the nine hole Burke Golf course, This project seems to need additional funding before it can proceed.
