......when the server rolled back, it also rolled back the list of numbers it assigns to a post, so the numbers are being re-used.

Your browser, however, DGAF. If you once read a post with that number, it's stored in your browser history, so your browser will tell you the post is already read when it's not.

Unfortunately, other than clearing your cache and browsing history, that's going to happen until the number assignment catches up to where it was before the server rolled back. After that, posts will show up blue again.
