his American record in 2023 of 3:43.97 . In fact Yared's 4 best times are all in the last 4 Pre Classics. #2 2025-3:45.95, #3 2024-3:46.22, and yesterday #4 at 3:46.61. I am sure a lot of this is they don't run the mile too often. The big deal all 4 times he beat home favorite Cole Hocke, who the guy next to me. as I was rooting on Nuguse with my ND hat on, said Cole has had his number like the last Olympics. After the race I said except here in Eugene. Still Yared lost to some great runners in the Pre: Norwegian Ingebrigsten in 23 & 24, Brit Josh Kerr in 24, Dutch Niel Laros in 25, and now Australian Myers yesterday. All 4 of them got their national records they still hold in Eugene when they beat Yared, who still holds his American mile record. The Brit record broken had been held 40 years by Steve Cram.who broke Sebastian Coes' 1981 mile record. Legends all just like Prefontaine.

Good time for Yared given how hot it was in Eugene. In fact last three years at least one distance world record was broken at Pre each year but this year with the heat no world records were set. The biggest record was the Women's mile which Nikki Hiltz broke Mary Decker Slaney's 43 year old Prefontaine record. Nikki was a former University of Oregon runner who left 10 years ago (see article) but now is a fan favorite in Eugene where folks were rooting her on to upset the two Kenyon's led by world record holder Faith Kipyegon. Fun races with the other surprise was Texan high schooler Tate Taylor winning the 200M over a great field including the defending Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo
