meaningful options beyond just the top pro league. In basketball, a player can can go to the G League for a few years to keep the dream alive and/or go overseas and travel the world. Demetrius Jackson, for example, despite never really catching on with an NBA team, appears to still be playing professional basketball.

Baseball has the minor leagues, but those are developmental leagues for MLB teams. They don't have a lot of interest in carrying a bunch of 30 year olds who are never going to contribute to the big league club.
