I stayed in South Bend the summer he was drafted.

A.J. and I had a mutual friend who was also in town for the summer. The three of us had some beers at Corby's right after he signed. Corby's is a lot different during the summer. It doesn't get crowded and people mostly sit outside when they open up the back. We had the bar area to ourselves that night and enjoyed a few pints while we shot the shit.

He was assigned to the Silverhawks initially. My buddy and I caught a lot of their games that summer. I didn't think I'd enjoy a summer in South Bend, but A.J. helped make it a good one.

A summer in SB during the college years

is a blast. I'd recommend every student do one - take a class or two, get a job of some sort doing whatever, and get to know the community. I made friends with "townies," got my fair share of free drinks at the student favorite watering holes because I knew the bartenders on a first name basis, and made friends with classmates I hadn't had a chance to meet before. Minor league baseball, Lake Michigan, the East Race rapids, and trips to Chicago top it all off.

I'd go back to that summer leading into my senior year in a heartbeat.

I took 9 credits the summer between my sophomore and junior year and I had a blast.
