I read a reasonable explanation for DiMaggio's late entry into the HOF. Although the Hall was started in 1936. 26 years earlier, the ballots still contained numerous future Hall of Famers, which made it more difficult to reach the 75 percent vote and failed to break the logjam. (Apparently Jimmy Foxx was another delayed entry, waiting for the ninth ballot). The problem was aggravated by the fact that the 5 year wait before becoming a candidate was not yet implemented, increasing the pool of candidates.
