In reply to: Cal Raleigh and Kyle Schwarber - are they the same guy?  posted by sprack

At the moment Raleigh has the lowest batting average all-time during a season with 50 or more HRs. Next on the list are Alonso (2019) and Bautista (2010) at .260

It’s not a sure thing but it seems likely that at season’s end, Raleigh and Schwarber will be 1-2 on that list among ~53* all-time seasons with 50 or more HR. Schwarber needs 5 more HR and they both need to avoid lifting their batting average above .260.

*53 assumes Ohtani gets 50 this season but not Judge, Suarez, or Caminero. If Suarez hits 9 more HR he would likely join Raleigh and Schwarber as 1-2-3 here because he is hitting .235 now. Caminero is hitting .259 but needs 11 HR to get to 50, so he’d probably land over .260 if he got that hot.

Kyle 3 HR tonight. Getting closer. Ok make it 4!

that I know of:

Harmon Killebrew hit 48 in 1962 with a BA of .243. Also led the AL in strikeouts with "only" 126. He was very, very similar to Raleigh and Schwarber in many ways, including that he also walked 106 times (1 of 7 times he had over 100 BB), had 20 doubles (his normal pace almost every year) and had an OPS of .912. He was third in the MVP vote.

and now they both have 4 homer games *
