the last manager to win a post-season series for the Reds (1995). Even though he beat the Dodgers in the NLDS that year, Marge Schott fired him after the season was over. The Reds haven't done squat in the playoffs since then.

May he rest in peace. Another member of the 1966 Baltimore Orioles is gone.

There can’t be many of the ‘66 Orioles left. Palmer and Boog come to mind right away.

He was third in Rookie of the Year voting in 1966, when the O’s won their first World Series as part of that fantastic infield with Brooks Robinson, Luis Aparicio (also still living) and Boog Powell and in later years with Mark Belanger. He won 3 Gold Gloves. Then after being traded to the Braves he hit an uncharacteristic 43 home runs which set the major league record at the time for second basemen.

People remember him most as a manager, but he was a really good player.

The falling out between him and Angelos

after back-to-back ALCS appearances was one of the worst moments of the Angelos Era and ushered in 14 consecutive losing seasons.

Angelos shitcanned Jon Miller around that time, too, but I’m happy to say that Miller will be at Camden Yards tonight for the 30th anniversary of Cal’s breaking Gehrig’s record. That is a very welcome development during an otherwise horrible season.
