the game, who was almost exclusively used as a pinch runner (and thus almost exclusively asked to do something for which he was better than almost everyone else in the league) proved himself marginally more valuable than a AAA player? If we treated his career performance as one year of production, it would take one of the best baserunners in the game 10 years before he proved himself one full win over a replacement level player. That would likely understate his value--not overstate it.
