Are replacement windows a scam? by Jimbo Irish

We have a house built in 1999 and the front gets hit dead on from the sun (faces south) and we have some considerable woot rot that needs to be dealt with that's affecting both the window frames and the windows themselves.

We've been getting all kinds of quotes on different solutions from vinyl to fiberglass to more wood, etc. and I feel like there should be some kid of easier solution of just replacing the wood frames on the ones that are needed instead of replacing all the windows, but all of these folks are good salespeople and seem to have a myriad of reasons why that would be a waste of money.

Has anyone gone through this before? What is the right approach on this?

To put it in perspective, if were were to do the entire house we're looking at quotes between $35k-$50k which just seems outrageous.

I'd much prefer to spend $5k somehow, even if it is a bandaid solution.
