Notre Dame football's 7 Mules by olson

I have read many articles (mostly on the Internet) where people claim that this player or another was one of ND's famed 7 Mules.

It appears that for some people, all one needs to be considered to be one of the 7 Mules was to have been an ND football lineman (reserve or not) sometime during the period between 1922 & 1924.

The 7 Mules were seven distinct ND linemen who started for Notre Dame in front of the 4 Horsemen (also 4 distinct players) on the 1924 National Championship team....see picture of them in linked article(second picture from the bottom).

Of the 7, only 3 initially came to ND on a football 'scholarship':

*Adam Walsh C Hollywood, Cal Hollywood High
*Chuck Collins E Oak Park Ill St Ignatius
*Edgar 'Rip' Miller T Canton, Oh McKinley

2 of the 7 Mules had been Interhall stars promoted to play on the varsity

*Ed Hunsinger E Chillicothe Oh
*John Weibel G Erie Pa

1 came to ND to play basketball

*Nobel Kizer G Plymouth, Ind

1 transferred to ND from Carleton College

*Joe Bach T Chisholm, Mn

The 3 football scholarship 'Mules' were in the same 1921 ND recruiting class as the 4 Horsemen....ironically, this was one of Rockne worst Frosh football squads-finishing 3-3 (the '25 Frosh finished 1-3...but Rock split that squad for 2 games one day & the 'split' Frosh lost both games).

The '21 Frosh played without QB Stuldreyer(who broke his ankle)-Layden played QB on the '21 Frosh squad...and most of the season without Adam Walsh-who broke his shoulder(collarbone?)
