We should not underestimate the risk for even young healthy by IAND75

Athletes. We don’t know enough about Covid. Especially its medium and long term effects, as obviously there hasn’t been enough time to observe and study them.

But the proclivity for cardiac involvement, even among young and otherwise healthy people is concerning. At the most serious end of the spectrum is the possibility of severe myocarditis resulting in sufficient damage to require transplant or the possibility of sudden death from arrhythmias. Less severe, but still very significant intermediate or long term effects may include reduced exercise tolerance and strength. For a couch potato like me it may not be too life altering, but for an elite athlete it could mean the end of their athletic career.

We need remain very humble in our lack of understanding of this new disease.

See the linked article about the cardiovascular effects on young athletes.
